What is Arthritis?
Many people think of arthritis as aches and pains and a disease that affects older people. However, arthritis can affect young and old, male and female, rich and poor and can affect just about any one.
Arthritis is the name given to a group of related disease which includes Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, gout and fibromyalgia.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage in the joints becomes diseased and damaged (through wear and tear).
Cartilage protects the ends of the bones from wearing each other away where they meet inside a joint. They provide a smooth surface that allows the bones to move against each other with less friction. The cartilage between the bones main purpose is to act as a shock absorber, cushioning the bones and soaking up the impact created by the movement and physical stresses.
When the cartilage is damaged joints will become inflamed that’s when pain and stiffness can settle in the joint. The cartilage will become rougher and thinner, and the joint will swell, causing an increase in the production of the synovial joint. Joints that are commonly affected are the knees, hips, hands, spine (neck lower back)
Warning signs for osteoarthritis are;
- Joint pain, deep seated ache from the inner core of the joint.
- Stiffness that tends to occur after periods of inactivity, such as sleeping or sitting.
- Aching in the joints following activity, felt in the early stages of the condition.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Our body is equipped with an effective immune system that fights off bacteria and other foreign bodies. Without a strong immune system our bodies become consumed by infections and disease.
If our immune system should suddenly go barmy, and start attacking the body’s own tissues then we are in trouble, this is the case with rheumatoid arthritis.
The white blood cells of the immune system attack the joint lining (synovial membrane) as if it were a foreign object. The membrane becomes inflamed and painful, the entire joint capsule swells and the synovial cells start to grow and divide in an abnormal way, causing the joint to deteriorate
As it progresses, the disease results in damage to the cartilage, bone, tendons and ligaments. It can also affect the eyes, lungs and heart.
Warning signs for rheumatoid arthritis are:
- Pain, warmth, redness, swelling or tightness in a joint.
- Joint pain or stiffness that last longer than an hour after prolonged inactivity.
- Morning stiffness that persists, aching.
- Pain that occurs in the same joint on both sides of your body.
- Persistent pain in a joint often lasting the whole night.
